Photography Exhibit: All Aboard! Artists and Historians Picture the Railroad

August 14 – October 4, 2009

G. K. Hardt Gallery, Petaluma Arts Center, 230 Lakeville St., Petaluma

The Petaluma Arts Council, in collaboration with the Northwest Pacific Railroad Historical Society, presents All Aboard! Artists and Historians Picture the Railroad – an exhibition of train-themed fine art and historical photographs and memorabilia. This mixed-media show includes representational and interpretive pieces from a wide range of Northern California artists. The exhibition was juried by Chandra Cerrito and Debra Lehane. Ms. Cerrito is a Napa-based art advisor and director of Chandra Cerrito Contemporary in Oakland, CA. Ms. Lehane is the curator of the Voigt Family Sculpture Foundation, Geyserville, CA.

Included in the show is a collection of train memorabilia from early 20th century Petaluma and environs. The collection features historical photographs, original “heralds”, or insignia of regional railroad lines, displays on the historical trolley restoration project, and much more.

Twenty-four Bay Area artists will exhibit 40 pieces, including Juror’s Choice, San Francisco-based artist Steven Allen. His porcelain train sculpture, “Art Train (Homage to Jun Kaneko),” features elements based on the renowned Japanese ceramicist’s iconic dongo, or “dumpling,” forms. Invited artist Monty Monty will also show four transportation-related sculptures, utilizing vintage and every day objects to create thought-provoking and whimsical assemblages.

Additional events associated with the show include:

The first train depot in Petaluma was constructed in 1871. The Petaluma Arts Center, now located in the renovated baggage depot from that era, is home to the Petaluma Arts Council and the G.K. Hardt Gallery. All programs are free. Donations gratefully accepted.
