Definitions:

Static:
Static is the default positioning for a <p> tag. A static element stays within the flow of the xhtml — one element follows another, separated by the default margin.
Relative:
In relative positioning, the element is positioned relative to the normal flow of the xhtml. The element is offset from the the static positioning (following the default margin of the previous element) based on the values given.
Absolute:
Absolute positioning means that the element is positioned based on the origin of the parent element (e.g., the <body> or <div> tag). The position will stay constant with respect to the parent element even as the reader scrolls through the web page.
Fixed:
Fixed positioning means that the element is positioned in relation to the browser window. As a user scrolls through the page, the fixed element moves with the browser window.
