Typical User Testing Report
Target Market of Website
The website is intended to provide information about the Willow Creek Treatment Center and North Valley School for potential clients, especially those seeking residential treatment and education for emotionally disturbed deaf and hard-of-hearing youths. Caregivers, youths, social workers, parole officers, other service providers, and potential staff members would be typical users of the site.
Typical User Selection
Barbara Street, the website development team member from Willow Creek Treatment Center, selected ten individuals she would describe as typical users and has provided their email information to the project manager. Their responses to the website survey questions are listed below.

- To the videos.
- Residential.

- Yes.
- Yes. Wanted to see each staff member and I was not patient to wait until it loaded completely.
- Yes.
- Very easy.
Were the pages interesting? Why or why not?
- The site was interesting to me as a relative of Barbara Street. It seems to me that it would also be very interesting to someone in a problem situation that is responded to by the Willow Creek program. However, see below: I believe that impact would be stronger by avoiding "telling it all" and sticking to the main points.
- Yes, interesting because of the pictures, not too much text, and the colors.
- On a scale of 1-10, I could give the pages a 7. The basic information was good, but I thought the format of paragraphed text was too "wordy". Organizing and simplifying the info might be helpful, such as using bulleted lists, or maybe hyperlinks leading to other pages or pop-up boxes with more info, if the person wanted to read it.
- Yes, loved the videos esp introduction. Loved the residential slide show.
- Overall, yes. I would have preferred that the text for the residential section be broken up in some way (bullets, space between paragraphs, headings).
- I think they are well thought out for someone unfamiliar with your program.
Did you find any typos? Where?
- Nope. But I'm a typo maker not a typo finder.
- No.
- Didn't spot any, and I have "eagle" eyes. Good job!
- Oh, I was not looking for them but I didn't notice any.
- I didn't notice any.
- I didn't notice any but I was looking very quickly.
Were there any links, including mail links, that did not work?
Which ones?

- Didn't try.
Did the pages load quickly? If not, which pages loaded slowly?
- All pages opened rapidly.
- They loaded quickly.
- All the pages loaded quickly, as they should, since we have a T-1 system where I work.
- Yes, except for the videos, but that's normal...well actually I went back to view the videos and gave up. Took too long and I couldn't get it to load while on pause, oh and also the calendar took a little while...though it was a blank page at first.
- Yes, they loaded quickly.
- No, but that's a function of my computer.
Were there any images that did not load? Where?

- Yes. I have Quicktime Player Version 7.1.3.170
- Yes. 9.0.
- 7.1.
- Yes, 7.3.
- No.
- No.
Did the videos play?
- The videos came on but they didn't sustain. In some instances the sound went off, in others the video prematurely turned off.
- Trouble with choppy movies because I use Explorer 6.
- They started to play, but all the videos took a lonnnnnngggg time to buffer, and I ran out of patience before they finished. They shouldn't take that long. Other than that, the picture quality and captions looked good and the length of the videos was appropriate.
- Yes.
- Yes.
- My computer isn't that fast.
Could you find the email address to donate to Willow Creek Center? Describe how you found this item.
- Yes. Clicking "Donations" on the left of the home page got me there and the e-mail address was clearly shown. Although it is clear that this is a private non-profit, it might be wise to show that donations are tax deductible with an admonition to check with your tax professional.
- Easy! On left hand side bar.
- Yes. Clicked the link"Donations" on the left side panel, and also the link at the bottom, "Donations." Are you going to add PayPal? I hope so! I love PayPal and find it an extremely easy and convenient way to donate, especially spur of the moment.
- Yes, just clicked on where it said to, ggoodwin.
- Yes, I clicked on "donations".
- I didn't look.
Did you find the calendar? IF so, was it easy to read?
- I found the calendar at the North Valley site. It seemed easy to read.
- Could not find it.
- Yes. Very nice. Willow Creek should make a habit of putting more info in it and keeping it up to date, then I would check it more often. I'd also like it to be possible to add an event to my Outlook calendar without having to go through Google.
- Yes, yes.
- Yes.
- I didn't look.
Were you able to differentiate between the Willow Creek pages and the North Valley School pages?
- I could differentiate between the pages but the relationship between Willow Creek and North Valley School is not made clear.
- Not really.
- Yes.
- Yes, because I know the difference. If I didn't know I still would have.
- Yes.
- Yes, but I'm familiar with the program.
Were you able to find the Employment Opportunities page? Describe how you found this page.
- I understand this page is not yet available. I presume it would be linked to the "Contact Us" section.
- Yes. Curious about the staff, I went to the Staff link then saw the drop down list that included employment.
- Clicked on the "Staff" link, then Current Employment Opportunities.
- Yes, clicked on "Our Staff."
- Yes, it appeared after clicking on "Our Staff".
- Didn't look.
Were you able to find a physical address for the school?
- Nope. These should be emphasized on the home page.
- Easily.
- Yes, it's at the bottom of the page, and also in Contacts.
- Yes.
- Yes, under contact information.
- Yes and that's important.
How would you describe the overall tone and feel of the site?
- With some amendments it should effectively tell the story for information seekers. My personal impression is that some pages are way too wordy. The site could effectively tell its story and guide the reader by substantially reducing its verbage. The North Valley FAQ's page took on that job very effectively.
- Beautiful. Bright, inviting.
- Excellent job! Except for the videos, almost perfect.
- Great. Very positive.
- It has a good, easy-to-navigate feel. I would break up the narrative in some way so that it is easier to read.
- Very professional and positive = inviting.
What did you like best about the site?
- It is a solid attempt to tell the story and offer roadmaps to potential users. I believe, with some amendments, it will be very effective.
- The movies but I wished they worked with my browser.
- Simplicity, ease of use, everything in a logical place, nothing extraneous that did not need to be there.
- Colors, info presented nicely, slide show.
- Short and sweet.
- It's comforting for someone looking for what you have to offer. It's orienting.
What suggestions for improvement do you have?
- See above.
- See above.
- Fix the videos. Do the videos come with voice-over? They should. Maybe later on, you could add videos of successful graduates sharing their success stories, if they're willing. That would be very inspiring. Be sure to add a PayPal link, too! I liked the photos on the home page, and if you could make them so they change, fade in and out, etc., that would be a nice touch.
- Speed up videos, have a picture/slide show of each staff member (but maybe you don't want to show each member but I wanted to see each one, smile) and then video...I never saw each member because video didn't seem to load fast but it could be just me...tried again and it is way too long. I got very frustrated and did not want to look at the other videos because of the time element.
- See above.
- None at the moment.

Summary: Changes Based on User Testing Outcomes
The feedback we received from the "typical users" referred to us by our client has been very helpful. As far as functionality of the website is concerned, we have continued working on improving the video playback and have fixed the broken links.
There is one major improvement to the site that was suggested by several of the testers that we have not been able to address: that the text throughout be shortened, or that the text be divided up so that the main pages provide only a brief overview and then offer links to additional pages containing any detail. Unfortunately, such an edit goes beyond the scope of this (classroom) project, but we have passed the suggestion on to our client, encouraging her to edit the text herself and to upload it to the site with the assistance of Willow Creek's computer specialist.
The feedback we received as to the design, content, navigation, and overall "feel" of the site has been very positive and seems to indicate that these elements have been successfully implemented. We thank all of the testers for the time spent and the valuable feedback they provided to us.
